The work of these two gifted artists forms a rich and unique expression of their approach to art.
The work of these two gifted artists forms a rich and unique expression of their approach to art.
Hawaii artists Young and Okamoto, believe that for many artists, materials are crucial participants in the conversations that result in the finished object. The artists say in their statement that the finished works of art,”on a good day, still whisper and echo the conversations that happened along the way.”
The artists invite you to come and participate in their material conversations.

Faculty Biennial Art Exhibit
August 29 - September 20, 2007
Cora Yee, a graduate of both Punahou School and University of Hawai’i-Manoa has led a culture-enriched life as a result of being exposed to diversity in Hawaii, traveling through Europe for eight years this along with her recent marriage to her husband Roman, (originally from Nepal); is all integrated in her artwork. With her most recent images, Yee has abandoned her usual whimsical and decorative style to portray a much deeper, rich story of the Himalayan culture and religious beliefs. Yee’s inspiration derives from her admiration of the Himalayan people who base their lives around love and trust despite fear of political and socioeconomic turmoil in a developing country. Yee’s work demonstrates her intense passion through color and tones and a more introverted series of work has emerged, serious paintings, which engage the imagination of inner self. Don’t miss Yee’s first solo exhibition since the 70’s at the Koa Gallery at Kapiolani Community College, through October 19th.

Tom & Yoko Haar
Feb 7 - Mar 3, 2007
Photography & Ceramics
Opening Reception: Wed, February 7, 5 -7 pm (no lei please)
A gifted ceramicist, Yoko Haar, born and raised in Japan, has shown tremendous artistic growth in recent years. She is known for her use of natural objects and abstractions of nature in her work. Her new series brings focus to the texture of natural objects and a feeling of nature revealed at archeological digs as objects emerge from the earth. Subtle in color and form Yoko’s work reminds the viewer of music in the distance. Tom Haar is inspired with the abstractions found in nature. Currently, his influence by nature’s abstraction has led him to create works that challenge the senses to explore the natural world in it’s most intimate form. Haar says, “My interests lie in certain graphic elements such as the repeated life lines, as well as scratches and scrapes which show vestiges of the passage of time”. Don’t miss this timely and visually rewarding exhibit.

Koa Award Winner: Dodie Warren
March 8 – April 7, 2006
The Koa Gallery at Kapi‘olani Community College presents the thirteenth annual KOA Award to the artist, Ms. Dodie Warren. The KOA Award includes a solo exhibition at the Koa Gallery and other festivities.
Ms. Warren has spent many years teaching a multitude of print making techniques while mastering the complicated mezzotint technique. Witnessing
Feb. 8 - March 3, 2006
Gail Harada, Keiko Hatano, Tsugumi Iwasaki-Higbee, Jessica Kim-Campuspos, Lori Ohtani, Noe Tanigawa
Collecting, gathering, threading.
The six women in this exhibition bear witness to experiences with humor, frustration, anger, awe, and quiet contemplation.
The work does not offer grand insights or resolutions. Its intensions are modest -- to document the confusions, contradictions, and epiphanies of daily life, in ones home, outside one’s door, and beyond. Witnessing and struggling to witness.
